Watch Katherine's video below
The Leading Lenders’ team had the chance to sit down and chat with Katherine Lanteigne, Director of Women in Business New Brunswick. With an impressive background in management, economic development, entrepreneurship and community involvement, Katherine looks forward to representing and connecting others to advance women in business. In this interview, she answers questions about the Leading Lenders’ initiative and related topics. (A written version of the interview is also available below.)
Question #1: In your opinion, what is a leading lender? For me, a leading lender is someone that understands that there are disparities between women and men in the whole process of making a business financing request and that they are not necessarily always treated the same.
Question #2: What inspires you about the Leading Lenders project? As part of a non-profit organization that helps women entrepreneurs to start and grow their businesses as well as export their products or services, we hear so many stories about all the obstacles that these women entrepreneurs face on a daily basis, and especially when they are starting their business or looking to grow. We wish to no longer hear that women entrepreneurs have to use personal funds in order to start or grow their business.
Question #3: In your experience, what are the most significant barriers women entrepreneurs face when trying to access business financing? The most significant barrier that we hear is that women are facing gender stereotypes, for example they feel like they are being asked questions that are not necessarily being asked to men entrepreneurs. Or we often hear that they don’t feel they are being taken seriously.
Question#4: What tips would you offer to lenders who are looking to support a woman entrepreneur during her journey?A tip that we could give to an innovative lender is being open-minded and ask himself or herself if the questions that they are asking women entrepreneurs are the same questions they are asking male entrepreneurs.
