Racialized Women

For the purposes of our toolkit, the term racialized women is used instead of women of visible minorities. We decided not to use the term visible minorities since this implies that certain racial groups are minorities within Canada because they are inevitably compared to Caucasians (whites). To move away from the notion of a Caucasian majority “race,” we prefer to use the more neutral term racial group. We realize that the term racialized women is quite broad and includes women in various non-Caucasian racial groups. The data collected rarely divides women into racial groups. Whenever possible, we will strive to be more specific and to indicate directly to which racial group we are referring.
